Do We Need A Benevolent Dictator ?
MD COVAI DRIVES A…
Sixty years after we became a free nation, we still find utter povery among our people with religious, lingustic bigotry everywhere and also war over boundaries, share of water, terrorist attacks on places of worship etc. In short the emotional integrity of the nation which was there in our country when the Country was being ruled by Kings of more than 500 princely States seems to have been totally lost.
In those days prior to the arrival of East India Company, even before Md. Ghazni defeated Prithiviraj Chauhan in the Second battle of Tharain, we had a peaceful Hindustan where every community was living peacefully. There were no starvation deaths as happens in Independent India every year as a routine in Ganjam District of Orissa. There were no communal clashes. People were travelling freely from Kashi to Rameshwaram and back forth. There were no inter state water disputes on sharing of river waters. Kings were collecting only Land Taxes but providing all civic ameneties to the subjects. Like todays’ loan waivers, Kings either reduced or waived land taxes if farmers complained of crop failure. Why is that we failed as a nation state to eliminate mass povery and hunger while everyyear crores of rupees worth grains in FCI Stockyards are either rotten or eatern away by Rats. Why do we adore such people as Thackerys,Vattal Nagrajs, and espouse the cause of regional identities ?
Let us think the otherway. We were told that Monarchy is bad. Self government is the best. Infact, Self government is not at all a substitute for good government. Except for Her Majesty’s government in Briton, and till recently the HRH of Nepal, there were no officially recognised monarchies with powers. Japan still revers its monarchy but it is the Diet which determines the policies and the Monarchy is a titular head. But why is that the self government we have chosen fails all the way and all the time ? Is it due to the fact that we have chosen a wrong set of people ? Is it because these people lack the ability of our erstwhile Kinds and Princes ? Is it true that Kings and princes of yesteryears were looting the money as is being done now by our elected representatives?
The system of democracy works well when the electorate are literate and the elected people are held accountable. There has not been a single instance of a politician in india getting punished by the law. We have a poor rate of literacy over all- about 60% and the people below BPL are about 30% who can not distinguish between good bad and the worse. There are various ethnic, linguistic, religious, caste identites our people have which is being continuously exploited by the politician. What else is the solution?
Certain section believe that probably a benevolent dictator could set the things right. Some one like Dr.Mahathir Mohammad of Malaysia who transformed that country in to a developed nation all by his inspiring leadership. Despite being a Muslim nation, the fundamentalists have not got entrenched in to their civil society as yet. Do we have one among our chosen ones who displays such an ability to inspire confidence of the masses and who can be trusted with unquestioned power ? Probably Narendra Modi could come closest to the model. One can take objection to the fact that it was this man who let loose state sponsored terrorism on minorities, stood impeached by Supreme Court for his alleged complicty in the ethnic cleansing. But again, he has been a succesful administrator. He has ruthlessly weeded out corruption. He has delivered on his promises and has the guts to demand user charges for civic amenties unlike his counter parts who promise free electricity, free TV and what not ?
Could Lal Krishna Advani be the another contender? No doubt LK Advani is a towering personality and a hard core nationalist. But his complicity in the Babri Masjid demolition takes away the lustre. His failures as Dy PM and Home Minister are too many to dismiss him from the list of claimants.
Another person whom I think could be ruthless in implementing decisions is – hold your breath, Ms. Mamta Banerjee. Yes. the Bengali Tigress and Didi who time again has proved that she is a smart street fighter in matters concerning the poor of India. I rule out Jayalalitha because of her bloated ego and her endless list of corruption charges.
Fiery Fernandez is another serious contender. He is a self less trade union leader of yesteryears, a fire brand politician, a man of simple living., and a profound hater of Nehru family. But again his closer links with terrorist groups in the name of human rights make his choise questionable.
Probably we may have to request Dr,Mahathir Mohammad himself to spare some of his valuable time to set right things in India. For pure integrity I would vote our Ex President Dr.Kalam but I am not sure whether he will be ruthless enough to crush dissent if the need arises.
